Onamissionfromgod ploughed through a heavy track and survived a protest but the honest galloper managed to score a fighting win in the Ashley’s Kid’s Rides Handicap (1450m) at Kilmore.
The six-year-old posted his third victory from his last four outings at Kilmore when raced on the speed throughout before scoring narrowly.
Onamissionfromgod worked up to fitness with reasonable runs at Seymour and Benalla with the conditioning coming in handy for the gelding on the testing surface.
Trainer Alicia Macpherson engaged apprentice Kayla Nisbet to ride Onamissionfromgod and the gelding settled into a good rhythm for the 2kg claimer once he found the front soon after the start.
Onamissionfromgod travelled kindly for Nisbet before the rider increased the tempo from the 500 metres in a bid to make the rest of the field work hard to stay in touch.
Only the short-priced favourite Get Pronto went with Onamissionfromgod in the straight. The pair fought the race out over the final 200 metres, bumping on at least one occasion before Get Pronto hit the front 75 metres from home.
However, Onamissionfromgod refused to wilt in the closing stages, fighting back to score his fifth win after a gritty effort.
Get Pronto’s rider protested the result but stewards dismissed the objection, confirming Onamissionfromgod as a first-time winner on heavy ground.
Onamissionfromgod earned a $9000 winner’s cheque for his owners, taking his prizemoney tally to more than $80,000.
Congratulations to Onamissionfromgod’s owners – Mr C C Macpherson, Ms E Rae, Mr S V Isbister, Mr D Gruevski, Mrs K J O’Callaghan, Mr M E Nott, Mr J Celano, Mr C G Anderson, Mr R O'Shannessey, Mr J Soklevski – on their latest success.
